Connecting our Climate and Circular Futures
Masterclass series
Presented by University of Technology Sydney’s Institute for Sustainable Features and One
Planet Consulting, this masterclass brings together a powerhouse of industry experts from
Australia and around the world to amplify critical and smarter strategies required to transform
our habits. They will look at ways to feed our people, support new businesses and farmers, repair
our soils and cut methane emissions for a more sustainable future.
Australia is trailing behind global leaders in these areas. It is also lagging its own 2030 targets for
diversion of organics from landfill. There is a need for systemic change to transition to a more
circular, low emissions bio-material economy by 2030 and there will be mounting pressure for
Australia to sign the global pledge to cut methane at the UN COP 27 in November.
The challenges are clear and dire. A staggering 30 per cent of food never reaches our plates, all
the while, households continue to struggle to buy food. Less than 50 per cent of Australian
households have access to organic recycling, businesses have no coordinated collections, and
our landfills are filling. Moreover, an increasing number of retailers are dumping everything
including nutritious organics into landfill via one waste bin. In agriculture, fertiliser prices have
doubled and soil health continues to decline. We are mismanaging our organics and must
change.

The masterclass will also provide facts and models on climate, emissions and circular
economy and will analyse gaps and bold actions to be taken in order to reach 2030 targets.
The expert team will address key questions and participant’s answers for informed progress.
