About the Hume Renewable Energy Roadmap project

The Hume Renewable Energy Roadmap project is being delivered by the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning, on behalf of the Ovens Murray and Goulburn Regional Partnerships.

There is potential for significant economic, social and environmental benefits to the Hume region through the uptake of renewable energy. The Hume Renewable Energy Roadmap will support the region to embrace the renewable energy transformation of our electricity system by:

- representing the voice of the community
- working to support building the capacity of the region to drive its own renewable energy future and achieve benefits for their communities
- identifying local barriers and issues
- understanding the investment potential of the region and
- clearly expressing what the community expect from the renewable energy transition

About the Hume Region

The Hume Region of Victoria encompasses the Goulburn Valley and North East regions. The area is known for its horticultural sector and dairy farming, as well as plantation forest resources respectively. The horticulture and dairy sectors support processing plants in Shepparton and outlying towns such as Strathmerton and Tongala. Whereas plantation timber is processed at any number of sawmills in the North East region and beyond.

Business and industry throughout regional Victoria sometimes struggle to effectively manage their organic waste. Some resource recovery is taking place; however, issues of contamination and biosecurity often results in large volumes of potentially recyclable organics going to landfill or other unsustainable disposal methods. This lost opportunity comes at great financial and environmental cost. However, there is the possibility of turning this liability into an asset.

Who should attend?

Suitable for food manufacturing representatives, farmers who generate or process organic waste, technology providers and bioenergy consultants within Victoria, this forum is an opportunity to hear from government and industry representatives on the strategies and programs which impact the bioenergy sector. Take part in a biomass feedstock workshop, find out about a live case study on an innovative regional bioenergy facility prospect and bring all the pieces together with the potential to collaborate with fellow participants. The session will conclude with some informative insights on how to secure third-party investment.

About the forum

This free half-day forum will provide insights, guidance and networking to aid attendees in identifying resource recovery and reprocessing opportunities for organics waste and strategies for successfully actioning them.
It will be an opportunity to bring together biomass producers, energy users, technology providers and leading bioenergy consultants as well as state and local government officials with the aim to develop project collaborations in the Hume region of Victoria.
