The 17th International Congress for Renewable Mobility – Fuels of the Future 2020. The conference takes place in the City Cube of Berlin on occasion of the International "Green Week“.
The organisers of this internationally established conference, Bundesverband Bioenergie (BBE), Union zur Förderung von Oel- und Proteinpflanzen (UFOP), Bundesverband der deutschen Bioethanolwirtschaft (BDBe), Verband der deutschen Biokraftstoffindustrie (VDB) and Fachverband Biogas (FvB) have once again put together a conference programme that is politically highly topical and interesting with regard to current project projects and research results. Once again more than 600 participants are expected.
In the light of the current and extremely critical discussion on the implementation of the decisions of the Climate Cabinet government on the decarbonisation of transport, the measures adopted by the Federal Government will be intensively discussed with experts from the mineral oil and vehicle industry as well as science and politics on the first day of the congress. In view of the European strategy for the decarbonisation of transport, the congress is thus a trend-setting event because Germany, as "the car country" and the most important business location in the European Union, must assume a leading function. The congress is therefore the ideal platform for the professional discussion of these challenges.
On the second day, the focus will be on presentations on the development potential of biofuels from cultivated biomass, including residual materials such as grain straw, waste oils and fats as well as the alternatives expected in the medium term in the field of Power-to-X fuels. Politicians have high expectations of this alternative in particular and expect a rapid market ramp-up, as a mandatory contribution to the decarbonisation of the mileage of the existing fleet of around 40 million vehicles in 2030. Naturally, the question of the production capacity and origin of the required quantity of renewable energy arises in this context, if at the same time the growth of the required wind power and photovoltaic plants does not keep pace with the ambitious goals of the Federal Government. However, this is a prerequisite if the targets are to be met in the commitment period 2021 to 2030 in order not to have to buy emission rights from tax revenues. A secure electricity supply is therefore a central issue if power plants (nuclear and coal) have to be shut in Germany down from 2021.
In this environment, sustainable biofuels, such as biodiesel, will have to continue to play a pioneering role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions as a market-introduced basic option. The regulation of a greenhouse gas reduction obligation, which has proven its worth in Germany and has now been adopted in other member states of the EU, at the same time provides the way for CO2 pricing. The price of the biofuels used depends on their greenhouse gas efficiency, and greenhouse gas certificates can and will be traded between the companies subject to quota in the petroleum industry in order to compensate for a possible deficit. The benchmark price for the CO2 price formation in this quota trade is the penalty payment of €470 per tonne of CO2 that would otherwise be due. This penalty „drives“ the mineral oil companies to fulfill the greenhouse gas reduction obligation.
