As part of an inter-task project involving IEA Bioenergy Tasks 40, 43, 44 and 45, we are launching an initiative to involve experts in the assessment of the possible roles of bioenergy in well below 2°C (WB2) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) scenarios. Information on results and findings from recent studies examining how bioenergy and related technologies contribute to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions necessary to achieve the WB2 target will be discussed. Studies that are specific to a region or nation or of global importance are all of interest. The studies may cover several energy sectors or focus on a single sector. The initiative focuses on the use of biomass for heat, electricity and transport. In addition, we will also investigate how such biomass use can interact with other land-based mitigation options, such as afforestation, reforestation and biochar production and use to improve carbon storage in vegetation and soils.
The Inter-Task project will assess the role of bioenergy in WB2/SDG scenarios, with the aim of identifying and disseminating strategies for the implementation of bioenergy that contribute positively to a societal transition towards the WB2 objective and at the same time contribute to other SDG objectives.
Aims and objective of the workshop
- Provide an overview and update of studies assessing the roles of bioenergy in energy system pathways toward a WB2/SDG world.
- Identification of possible knowledge gaps.
- Develop ideas, actions and products for the future including multinational initiatives in short presentations and in a plenary discussion.
A report synthesising the submitted studies and workshop discussions will be published and disseminated by IEA Bioenergy.
