Decarbonisation Futures: Solutions, actions and benchmarks for a net zero emissions Australia
Published Wed 08 Apr 2020
Climateworks recently published a report outlining a pathway for Australian to achieve its climate commitments. The deployment of mature zero carbon solutions was reported to be key to rebuild from the impact of COVID-19. The benefits of immediately implementing renewable energy technologies included the creations of jobs, the increase of Australia's resilience and the decrease of energy costs.
The report noted that to reach net zero by 2050 mature technology solutions must be immediately and widely deployed.
Bioenergy, including energy from waste and biofuels, was highlighted as an industry able to immediately contribute to net zero emissions in the hard to abate sectors of transport and industry. Domestic freight and aviation represent more that 50% of Australia's domestic transport emissions. Climateworks noted that the use of bioethanol and renewable diesel should be supported by Government policy to reduce emissions in the transport sector. The capture and use of methane was reported to be able to immediately contribute to the decarbonisation of Australian agricultural and food industries.
